  • Abstract
    In the preschool curriculum, “counting objects” and “associating between object groups and numbers” are the requirements for mathematics education. In line with this idea, the aim of this research is to determine the views of teacher candidates on how to teach counting and number concepts. The research was designed as a phenomenology research which is one of the qualitative research methods in order to examine the pre-school teacher candidates awareness about the concept of counting and number. The study group consisted of 103 preschool teacher candidates in the second year of their undergraduate program. In order to collect the research data, semi- structured interview forms were prepared. Content analysis techniques were used in the analysis of the obtained data. Descriptive statistics were used in the presentation of the data. As a result of the research, it has been determined that there are deficiencies in the duration of the activities to be performed and the activities to be performed for teaching the counting and number concepts of teacher candidates. In order to overcome these deficiencies, it was proposed to increase the level of utilization of scientific studies on counting and number concepts of teachers and prospective teachers and thus to create awareness.
