Abstract
The aim of this study is to describe the cultural pattern of Turkish Language and Literature course based on the views of teachers and students. The study was designed in phenomenology pattern. The sample of the study consists of 6 Turkish Language and Literature teachers and 30 volunteer students in three different high schools in Kocaeli. Oral interview were conducted to teachers and the answers were recorded. Data were obtained from the students through questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed by inductive coding technique. According to the results; teachers and students think that national, historical cultural values and national cultural heritage themes are given importance and emphasis in the program, but cultural diversity is not given much attention. In the context of cultural pattern, it was seen that the latest curriculum was not different from previous curricula. The course was found to be successful in strengthening the concept of race / nation which is one of the educational functions of culture. Additionally, the fact that the course accepts cultural awareness only on national and spiritual values, focusing on traditional values by defining culture the past, are the signs of conservative function of culture and education. It is suggested that the curriculum and textbooks would be designed in a more democratic pattern, and prepared and clarified for the cultural context of developments of 21st century.
