Abstract
This research is conducted to determine the causes of students’ fear about mathematics. The sample of the study consisted of 2580 students attending primary, secondary and high school in Uşak province in 2018-2019 academic year. In the scale development stages, the literature was searched. After composing the pool of items related to the scale, expert opinion was sought. A pilot study was conducted to determine the construct validity and reliability. As a result of exploratory factor analysis, dimensions as math fear caused by teacher, math fear stemming from environment, math fear stemming from the structure of mathematics, math fear stemming from the students own personal characteristics were formed and each of them consisted of five questions. The four obtained dimensions explained about 55% of the total variance. “The Causes of Math Fear Scale” was found to be a valid and reliable instrument for measuring the causes of math fear.
