Abstract
Scientific research is a process of collecting evidence via inquiry to understand the natural events. In this context, the project named as “Nature_Lab: Inquiry-based Science in Nature” aims to transform science from mystery to joyful learning and exploration activity by adapting natural events. In this study, it is aimed to investigate effects of the project activities on participants’ science views and images of scientist. To accomplish this goal, the project was implemented as a camp in Yozgat National Park for 24 secondary school 8th grade students and 12 science teacher candidates from different universities. The camp activities lasted 7 days and a total of 36 students and prospective teachers participated. Camp program included bio-diversity, climate change, water as life, energy in nature, and pollutants and inquiry-based science activities. This study was conducted the experimental method one-group pretest-posttest design. In this study, since the effects of the project on secondary school students’ image and view of scientist was examined, the data obtained from Scientist Opinion Survey and DAST were analyzed. The quantitative data was analyzed in SPSS 20 program using non-parametric tests, the Wilcoxon Signed Order Test. Quantitative data were analyzed by using Wilcoxon test which is one of the nonparametric tests in SPSS 20 program and qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis. According to results of the study, it was found that there is no significant difference between the students views on gender of the scientist and their thoughts about the character, emotions, characteristics and working life of the scientist, before and after inquiry-based science activities in nature. However, it was seen that the students traditional views on age, gender and social life of the scientist were changed positively. According to the results of the study, both theoretical and practical recommendations are presented.
