THE VIEWS OF SCHOOL PRINCIPALS, TEACHERS AND PARENTS ON THE HOMEWORK GIVEN IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

This study aims to comparatively describe opinions of school principals, classroom teachers and parents related to homework assignments given to students attending public primary schools. Data for this study was collected in 2016-2017, from 10 school principals, 10 teachers and 10 parents in public primary schools in Uşak, using semi structured interview forms. Data was analysed using descriptive analysis methods. Results show that teachers are influenced by principals regarding homework. The opinions of principals and teachers vary from opinions of parents. Most principals and teachers believe homework is required in order to reinforce learning, increase academic achievement and school achievement; whereas, most parents believe that homework does not develop students or increase achievement. According to principals, teachers and parents, agree that most homework related to Turkish and Maths are test like. Teachers award students with social awards like “signing, writing ‘well done’ or putting stickers on notebooks, posting pictures on class boards, having other students applaud them, appointing students star of the week or having them read poems on special occasions” or physical awards such as “pencils, erasers, books or notebooks”, parents award them with access to computer, playing outside or buying food and drinks they like. This shows that both teachers and parents are inclined to twist students’ arms with awards in order to control them.
