  • Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the metaphoric perceptions of primary school students about the concept of “technology” and the use of technology in their own learning processes. The design of the research in which the qualitative method was used was determined as phenomenology. The participants of the study consisted of 346 primary school students. In the first part of the study in order to determine the students’ metaphoric perceptions about “technology”, “Technology is like………. Because………” sentence frame was implemented to the students. The data were analysed through content analysis and metaphors were collected in 10 categories. These categories were listed as technology as tools, technology as structure, technology as imagination, technology as research, technology seen as harmful, technology as change and development, technology as educational tool, technology as game, technology as affective, and technology as profession according to the number of metaphors they include. It was determined that students developed 130 metaphors related to the technology. It was found that students defined technology as “computer”, “phone”, “tablet”, “brain”, “robot” and “science” most frequently. In the second part of the study, in order to determine how students use technology in their own learning processes, interviews conducted with 20 students in different grades who produced the most frequently repeated metaphors representing different categories of metaphoric perceptions about technology. Content analysis was subjected to the data obtained from these interviews. As a result of the research, it was found that students mostly use technology in their learning processes to conduct academic studies such as research, homework and videos. Also they were determined that the technology use of students was limited with the technological tools around them such as tablets, phones and computers and the efforts to reach information was limited with search engines.
