Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate academic success, scientific thinking skills and epistemological beliefs of middle school students who participated science and math project competitions. Participants for the study were 131 middle school students (69 science, 62 mathematics) who won the “Bu Benim Eserim” project exhibition, conducted by TÜBİTAK and Ministry of National Education in years of 2014 and 2015. For data collection; “Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning” developed by Lawson (1978) and adapted by Ateş (2002); “Epistemological Beliefs Scale” developed by Elder (2002) and adapted by Evcim (2010); open-ended questions measuring epistemological beliefs developed by Schommer (1990) and formulated by Güven (2013) were used. To analyze data, the independent samples t-test and multiple regressions were used. In conclusion, it was found that there is no significant difference between scientific thinking skills of students who joined the competition with science project and scientific thinking skills of students joining with math projects. However, in terms of epistemological beliefs, it was found that students with science projects are ahead of students with math projects in dimensions of certainty of knowledge and source of knowledge. The regressions analysis showed that scientific thinking skills and field of project were found have an effect on students’ epistemological beliefs. However, it was also detected that academic success has not important effect on students’ epistemological beliefs. The answers to open-ended questions that measure epistemological beliefs support statistical data.
