A STUDY ON DEVELOPING ATTITUDE SCALE TOWARDS ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

Environmental education aims to educate individuals who have positive attitudes and environmental consciousness about protecting their environment. Individuals who have positive attitudes towards the environment can be educated thanks to a planned environmental education which is started to be given from an early age. The current situation should be determined by measuring the attitudes of the students towards the environment. In this way, it can be planned which subjects should be regulated. Therefore, in this study, it was aimed to develop a scale to determine the attitudes of secondary school students towards environmental problems. A systematic process was applied in the development of the scale. The scale was applied to 567 people. The participants were randomly divided into two subgroups (n1 = 303, n2 = 264). Exploratory factor analysis was performed with the data of the first group and confirmatory factor analysis was performed with the second group data. As a result of exploratory factor analysis, it was determined that the scale consisted of 22 items and four factors. The validity of the obtained structure was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. The Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of the whole scale was determined as .88. The reliability coefficients of the sub-factors ranged from .70 to .84. The results show that the scale is valid and reliable to measure attitudes towards environmental problems.
