Abstract
The author describes some of the industry standards and practices of which the engineer or manager may not be aware when contemplating the design of a high-frequency solid-state ballast. The classes of ballasts are defined, and the features of dedicated and controllable output (dimming) ballasts are described. Qualification testing and manufacturing considerations are also discussed. It is concluded that a ballast can be designed and produced with superior performance characteristics which will yield a reliability equal to or superior to the traditional electromagnetic products, provided some care and attention is paid to the existing industry standards, specifications, and practices and methods of manufacturing
