Abstract :
The modeling of the electromagnetic phenomena that are predominant in the cathodic area of a plasma torch is described. The process comprises axisymmetric modelling of the coil, 3D Cartesian modelling of the electrodes, and modelling of the arc field using the Biot-Savart Law. The model has been used to compare the effects of different sources of electromagnetic fields on the operation of the torch. The use of the model has revealed a magnetic barrier effect created by the coil on the arc at the bottom of the cathode and has resulted in an adjustment of the measurement method used to study the torch
