Abstract
High gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) tests have been carried out on a complex ore containing uranium, rare earth elements and niobium in order to determine the suitability of this method as preconcentrator. The results show the superiority of HGMS to other preconcentration processes (e.g. flotation and conventional magnetic separation). Both wet and dry separation tests were carried out in a superconducting solenoid capable of producing magnetic fields up to 8 Tesla in a 73mm diameter room-temperature bore.
