Abstract
In this article, the maximum interspatial axial resolution that can be obtained with an ultrasonic system operating in pulse-echo mode is determined by applying a result of information theory: the Shannon-Hartley theorem. The expression obtained is function of the bandwidth and the signal to noise ratio of the emitted pulse. This expression was validated by experimental measurements.
