Abstract :
Measurements have been made of the temperature rise in 3370-type thin-film heads. Steady-state rises of 78°C were observed for a write current of 100 mA with the heads in an insulated chamber. Results from transient and steady-state sine wave experiments indicate a short time constant (75 μs) thermal behaviour associated with the head´s film structure. Much longer time effects (25 s) were observed and seem connected with the slider and its environment. A simple analytical model was in good agreement with the observed short time behaviour.
