Abstract :
A model of human problem solving emphasizing the dynamic transformation from process to process was developed. The transformation mechanism, the smoothness of which determines the efficiency of problem solving, is clarified. An experiment was conducted to verify the model. Fifteen graduate students participated in the experiment, and their problem-solving processes in debugging error in BASIC programs were recorded. An equation was derived to quantify the degree of matching between the model and the empirical processes studied in the experiment. The results indicate that the match is higher than 73%. It is believed that the model may allow the designer of a computer support system to improve the reasoning ability of expert systems or decision-support systems. Further research is recommended
