Abstract
The authors examine the feasibility of using a corona cage to predict audible noise (AN) generated from an HVDC (high-voltage direct current) transmission line. The possible use of the cage is based on the assumption that generation quantities of AN and corona current are determined by Fmax (the `true´ maximum conductor surface gradient in the presence of space charge) regardless of the surrounding electrode arrangement. This assumption has been verified by tests using corona cages and a test line. The results indicate that a corona cage is indeed suitable for predicting AN generated from HVDC transmission lines. It is applicable to DC lines with any line configuration and any polarity arrangement
