Abstract
Powder oxides, as sintering additives, have been found to increase the coercivity of PrCo5 containing Sm-Co sintering aid. These additives inhibit grain growth of the 2-7 phase and produce lanthanide oxides during the sintering. Pr0.8 Sm0.2 Co5 magnets containing 0.4-1 weight percent Cr2 O3 display magnetic properties similar to SmCo5 Possible hardening mechanisms consistent with the observed effects are discussed.
