Abstract
An approximate general formula to calculate the directivity of an antenna based upon the
-plane and
-plane patterns is proposed. For narrow beam patterns, the directivity is expressed in terms of the half-power beam widths of the main patterns. The better approximation of the formula presented here over the geometrical mean formula is pointed out.
