Abstract :
The role of the Oxford hybrid magnet as a research facility is described. After a discussion of the design philosophy of the resistive magnets used in the hybrid and elsewhere in the facility, the uprating of the hybrid magnet to its new combined field of 20 T by the development of the inner, resistive section is described. Problems encountered with this pattern of solenoid are described and plans to uprate the field to about 23.5 T by replacing the outer, superconducting section are outlined.
