Abstract :
A flying head is described which is suitable for use with stretched surface recording (SSR) disks. Data is presented on the flying height and dynamic stability of the head on SSR disks rotating at 3600 rpm. Stable head flight is observed to within 2 mm of the rims of the disk. The flying height at the gap is .13 to .15 μm over a wide range of disk tension and head radial position.
