Abstract :
A novel image thresholding method called minimal complexity measure thresholding (MCMT) is presented. It is based on the idea that image thresholding should produce the simplest picture possible, which in turn is based on the idea that a simple pattern is easier for humans to perceive. A hierarchical MCMT (HMCMT) algorithm is also shown; it categorizes portions of each local image area as `significant´ and `less significant´. The image thresholding operation can be performed by a set of logical operations on the image bit-planes. This operation is called the logical convolution on the bit-planes (LCBP). The DFE (depth-first picture expression) is useful for LCBP operation, because the coded bit-planes are directly processed to produce the threshold pattern in the DFE
