Abstract :
It is shown that direct modulation of semiconductor lasers yielding optical pulses with an exponential shape corresponds to a nearly chirp-free operation. With such pulses the maximum transmission capacity at ¿ = 1.55 ¿m is about 55 Gbit/s ¿km for a nondispersion-shifted single-mode fibre.
