Sum of absolute grey level differences: an edge-preserving smoothing approach

Two-dimensional noise-reduction techniques are used on synthetic images and compared. A new edge-preserving smoothing method is presented which is a simpler alternative to some selective-neighbourhood smoothing approaches already in use. Quantitative methods to measure noise reduction in images are used to evaluate and compare the performances of these techniques.
