Abstract :
The first preparation of a magnetic fluid consisting of \´alloy\´ particles of Fe-Co in colloidal suspension is reported. This has been prepared by the decomposition of a mixed metal carbonyl in the presence of surfactants. Electron diffraction has revealed particles with the "ordered" (superlattice) 1:1 ; Fe:Co structure whilst transmission electron microscopy indicates mean particle sizes in the range 5 - 8 nm. Stability in the gravitational field has been achieved using the surfactant Duomeen-TDO. Saturation magnetizations of up to ∼3 JT-1kg-1(30 Gauss) have been obtained in the as prepared state.
