Abstract
An approximate analytic method that permits explicit calculation of the multiplication function M(x), or the number of electrons flowing in the external circuit caused by one electron-hole pair injected at point x in an avalanche photodiode (APD), is presented. The method shown has the advantage over previous methods of requiring much less computing power for implementation. Good agreement with previous calculations is also shown.<>
