Abstract
This paper reviews the application of the finite element method in the design of electromagnetic devices. The order of presentation is historical. Available techniques and future trends are discussed in the context of finite element methods based on differential equation formulations. Examples illustrate the computational techniques from the perspective of designers of electromagnetic devices.
