Abstract
This paper describes how to achieve accurate data detection from deteriorated eye patterns suffering from both linear and non-linear distortion. Either of two threshold levels is selected for reading deteriorated data in the amplitude direction (data regeneration), and three different timing are used for reading deteriorated data in the time-domain direction (data retiming). The new data detection system combines these regenerating and retiming techniques. This system has enabled us to develop a digital recording system for use with a VCR in the slow EP mode.
