Abstract :
A novel experimental method for determining magnetostriction values from the stress dependence of Young´s modulus is described. The method is entirely mechanical requiring neither magnetic fields nor any measurement of magnetization or strain. The method utilizes the characteristic difference in stress dependencies of the magnetoelastic and elastic contributions to the total compliance for separating out the accumulating magnetoelastic strain under a monotonically increasing uniaxial stress. The recovered ultimate value of magnetoelastic strain is shown to converge to λsin ideally demagnetized untextured specimens. The sensitivity of the method is shown to increase with decreasing anisotropy and hence is especially applicable to amorphous materials. The recovered values of magnetostriction for three Fe-Ni glassy alloys are found to be consistent with reported values for comparable materials obtained by more conventional methods.
