Abstract :
High density recording response and overwrite characteristics for Ba-ferrite flexible disks were investigated. It is shown that magnetization transition becomes sharper as recording density becomes higher, and that sufficient overwrite characteristics are obtained if the same head with the same large write current is used both in writing and in overwriting processes. However, overwrite characteristics are not sufficient, if interchangeability among drives is required. This overwrite problem is due to the fact that partial-penetration recording, necessary for high density recording, takes place in the present Ba-ferrite flexible disks. This problem has been overcome by employing a newly developed pre-erase and R/W combination head.
