Abstract
A joint BBC/IBA technical specification of a transmission standard for digital two-channel sound with terrestrial television, for use with System I television [1], was approved by the United Kingdom Government in September 1986. Since then, broadcasters in the Nordic countries have adapted this digital system, now known as NICAM 728, for use with television Systems B and G which are used in those countries and much of the rest of Europe. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is considering a recommendation that those members planning to introduce digital two-channel sound with terrestrial television should base their choice on this system [2].
