Abstract :
At low linear recording densities noise in thin-film media is proportional to the transition density. At moderate densities the noise increases more rapidly, a fact which has been explained by correlation between noise jitter on adjacsent transitions. This paper argues that the correlation acts in the wrong sense and that the anomalous increase is, in fact, due to a rise in the noise per transition as the transitions approach each other.
