Abstract
An ivestigation has been undertaken for preparation of radial gradient refractive-index (r-GRIN) glass rods by a sol-gel method from metal alkoxides. Water leaching of jelly-like gels (wet gels) prepared from silicon and germanium alkoxides gives rise to a germanium concentration gradient in the gels, which are then densificated by heating to yield r-GRIN glass rods.
