Abstract :
It is shown that in the design of an observer for asymptotic reconstruction of the state of a linear time-invariant system the gain matrix can be explicitly parameterised by two sets of design parameters which in common completely characterise the modal behaviour of a state observer. This modal approach is well suited both for further investigations of state observer properties and for the development of practical observer design techniques.
