Abstract :
The electromagnetic backscatter from the inlet and engine of a jet aircraft is modelled by an open ended circular cylinder which is terminated in a complex load. Most researchers have modelled the jet engine at the end of the circular cylindrical inlet by a planar termination. The terminations used are a planar electric conductor, planar impedance surfaces and planar blade configuration. In this paper an engine model is proposed that consists of a radial blade configuration and a coaxial centre rod to respectively describe the engine blades and the axle of the engine more accurately. The method of calculation has been verified against previous results and by measurement. The radial vane engine model is a more realistic approximation to the physical construction of a jet engine, and it has been shown to have a different backscatter pattern as the size of the inlet and cylinder increase.
