Abstract :
The characteristics of a claw-pole generator are calculated using a two-dimensional analytical approach as well as using a two-dimensional FEM (finite-element method) calculation. The no-load curve, the torque, and the leakage inductances are obtained. The results of the two methods are compared, and the theoretical results are compared with experimental values. It is concluded that both two-dimensional approaches give sufficient accuracy for the analysis of the field and the characteristics of a claw-pole synchronous generator. The finite element method can account better for the stator current and is preferable in the load situation, but the analytical method better represents the rotor, and therefore is advantageous at no-load
