Abstract :
A noticeable anomaly of modal field in side-tunnel single-polarisation optical fibres is observed for some cross-sectional shapes. Accordingly, as hollow tunnels encroach on a core region, the field of the fundamental mode breaks up into a double peak. As a result of this transition, it closely resembles that of a higher-order mode.
