Abstract :
A novel trial field for the variational analysis of the fundamental mode of graded-index optical fibres is proposed, which is usable for non-Gaussian field distributions and is compatible with our physical intuition. A comparison is made with results obtained using the conventional Gaussian trial field and those of a rigorous numerical method. As a result, the present method can yield satisfactorily accurate results even in the region where the conventional method fails to be applied, without involving much computational effort.
