Abstract
A model is presented to account for coupling losses between optical fibers and semiconductor laser-diodes, when out-of-plane misalignments exist. Previous analytical models have only considered misalignments within the same plane; they therefore cannot be used when a fiber possesses an endface angle, because nonparallel endfaces give rise to out-of-plane misalignments. Experimental data are presented for several endface angles, and agreement with the proposed theory is established.<>
