  • Abstract
The authors present a simple approximate analysis of frequency-shift keying (FSK) coherent optical communications systems and obtain a closed-form estimate of the bit error rate. The inaccuracy of the approximate analysis is about 1 dB. The sensitivity penalty prediction of the approximate analysis is also within 1 dB of the accurate analysis for linewidths up to 100%.<>
