Abstract :
A statistical treatment of microwave remote sensing data of the Earth´s surface is described. The statistical characteristics of radiothermal emission from such surfaces as pure water, oil spills on water, soils, and forests are analyzed, and the relationships between the statistics of the radiothermal emission and surface parameters are discussed. As an example of the utility of the statistical approach of microwave retrieval the author suggests a method of determining the danger of fires in forests
