Abstract
Those who desire an image processing capability face a number of initial problems, however. Before implementing the hardware needed, several questions must be answered, such as what kind of hardware is available to meet the requirements and, if general-purpose computers are being used, what type of image processing is least expensive to implement. Since these concerns are an integral part of image processing implementation, the author briefly discusses them before surveying hardware developments in Japan from cancer screening to cucumber sorting.
