Abstract :
The first sea trial of a submarine transmission system utilising 1.55 μm lightwave technology was conducted in the Pacific, near the Amami islands in June 1986. Two highly integrated regenerators with DFB laser diodes and a 1.55 μm zero-dispersion shifted fibre cable were used in the trial. Successful transmission performances at 446 Mbit/s were obtained in a 120km repeatered line.
