Abstract :
This article deals with the demands for materials with assured properties, fostered investigations and the growth of scientific knowledge, towards the end of the 19th century. The efforts during these eras provided the impetus for the emergence and growth of engineered materials, including many different polymers (plastics), non-crystalline metals, and stronger than steel fibers, such as carbon fibers. Process engineers created processes and plants that required instrumentation to produce these new materials consistently.
