Abstract :
TEM studies of Zr-containing 2:17-type permanent magnet alloys show that the cellular microstructure develops from a high temperature 2:17R phase, first by the precipitation of Sm-depleted, Zr-rich "2:17H" platelet phase, then by the precipitation of Cu-rich, Fe- and Zr-depleted "1:5" boundary phase. These results are supportive of, but also suggest refinements to, a model proposed earlier for the metallurgical behavior of these alloys.
