Abstract :
The background of the development of superconducting machines in the USA is given. Recent progress in analysis, design and testing is outlined. The status of generator developments at Westinghouse, General Electric and at MIT is discussed. Testing and modification of the MIT-DOE 10-MVA machine is discussed. The current state of development of super conducting generators is assessed and discussed. The important work that remains to be done is given. The conclusion is that superconducting machines have high potential, but much work remains to be done.
