Abstract
A new cost-effective driving scheme is proposed to reduce the cost of driving systems for plasma display panels (PDPs) by using a new method of generating reset voltage waveforms. Power switches in conventional systems are involved in making only one of the reset, scan, and sustain voltage waveforms. In contrast, energy recovery switches in the proposed system make two specific voltage waveforms for PDPs, which results in the elimination of power devices. The proposed system utilizes the series resonance for an energy recovery operation in generating not only reset voltage waveforms but also sustain pulses with modification of sustain voltage levels. The proposed system reduces the total number of power switches by about 30 % compared to the prior approach and eliminates all power diodes in the system. Experimental results implemented in a 42-inch plasma TV are presented to show the validity of the proposed scheme
