Abstract :
The nonlinear Kerr interaction between the signal and noise generated by erbium-doped fibre amplifiers in ultralong all-optical lightwave systems, is analysed. The authors show that by optimising the fibre dispersion along the transmission line, the performance penalty due to nonlinearity may be suppressed
