Abstract :
Most variable-speed-drive (VSD) development is directed towards AC drives and it is likely that, for the foreseeable future, the rectifier-inverter and induction motor combination will dominate the market. This article looks at current technologies and future trends in VSDs including packaging, power semiconductor devices, silicon management, control methods, self tuning systems, communication protocols, power quality/EMC, and matrix and resonant converters.<>
