Abstract :
Scattering of electromagnetic waves from a slightly rough surface in uniform motion is examined by applying special relativity. The formulation of scatter is based on a boundary perturbation method and the analysis is confined to first order. Motion parallel as well as perpendicular to the mean plane of the scatterer is considered. The general case of scatter off the plane of incidence is treated and a new term for the scattering cross section results. This new term owes its existence solely to the scatterer´s motion. The velocity-dependent expressions obtained for the bistatic cross sections constitute a complete description of Fraunhofer scatter. Indications on the effect of the motion on the bistatic cross sections are given by a numerical example.
