  • Abstract
    In 1991 the Design Council published a report on ´Attaining competence in engineering design´ which had been been prepared by a joint Working Party of the Design Council and The Engineering Council. The report gives general guidance on the interpretation of an Engineering Council policy document requirement for the mandatory inclusion of design studies in all accredited engineering degree courses. This article discusses the meaning of ´design´ and the determination of design competence as detailed in the report.<>
