Abstract
A theory of photovoltaic effects in nonhomogeneous semiconductors which takes into account the variations of bandgap, effective masses, mobilities, majority carrier concentrations, and pair lifetime is presented. The photovoltaic effects observed on graded-composition Cdx Hg1-x Te single crystals are essentially due to the gradient of gap, but are strongly reduced by the diffusion length and resistivity variations, in accordance with the theoretical predictions.
